Origins- Wundt DONT DO Flashcards
about wundt
- published book called ‘principles of physiological psychology’
- opened first psy lab in germany
- considered father of psychology
- Separated philosophy from psychology
introspection
-recording own conscious thoughts with the aim of breaking them down into their constituent parts eg, thoughts, images and sensations
how are introspections recorded
- under strictly controlled conditions using same stimulus every time
- same standardised instructions issued- allows procedures to be replicated
structuralism
breaking down behaviours into the basic elements
emergence of psy as a science
- by 20th Century, Watson criticised introspections, His main issue was the data it produced was is subjective so it would be difficult to establish principles
- Said truly scientific psychology should study things that can be measured an observed, this created the behaviourist approach
behaviourist, biological and cognitive neuroscience (emergence of psy as a science)
- behaviourist- focuses on scientific processes involved in learning
- biological- experimental data and then investigate physiological processes
- cognitive- Biological and cognitive together showing a more scientific approach to measuring cognitions
strength of Wundt
-scientific, All introspection recorded in controlled environment of a lab, This is the strength because it insures no extraneous variables would impact the introspection made. He also used standardised procedures which means the experiment can be replicated which was ensured good validity
one limitation of Wundt
-subjective, some aspects of his work could be considered at unscientific today. He relied on self reporting techniques which lead to demand characteristics, potential leading questions and social desirability. This is limitation as all the introspection made were criticised by Watson in which he stated that truly scientific psychology should study concepts that can be observed and measured, these introspections could not, this therefore means it is difficult to establish general principles of human behaviour because of subjective data
another limitation of Wundt
subjective approach, Not all approaches use objective methods for example the humanistic approach ignore science as a whole but has brought client centred therapy and relies on all subjective data- this is a limitation because if we aren’t being scientific, we are ignoring personal data
