cognitive approach DONT DO Flashcards
Internal mental processes meaning
Used to investigate areas of human behaviour that neglected by behaviourism such as memory, perception and thinking
Are the processes in internal mental processes private or not
They are private, cognitive psychology study them in directly by making inferences about what’s going on inside peoples minds
What is a schema and what is a positive and negative of this
- Mental framework of beliefs and expectations develop through experience
+ Mental shortcuts to help this process lots of information quickly
- Can cause us to make mistakes if a new schema does not match a new experience we are in
What do theoretical models do
Make inferences by looking at behaviour and examining the thought processes
Cognitive neuroscience meaning
Scientific study of brain structures that are responsible for cognitive, mental, thinking processes and see where the functions are processed and stored in the brain
Strength of using cognitive approach
Uses highly controlled methods and uses a lab experiment
Less determinist than other approaches as we are free to think before responding to a stimulus
Weaknesses of cognitive approach
Lacks external validity as cognitive psychologists are only able to infer mental processes from behaviour they observe
Machine reductionism ignores the influence of human emotion on the cognitive system
