origins of the earth π Flashcards
what are the properties of life?
- consist of cells
- have different levels of cellular organisation
- use energy
- respond ton their environment
- grow
- reproduce
- adapt to their environment (short and long term)
what is the 2nd law of thermodynamics?
- entropy is a measure of disorder and disorder always increases
- BUT biological systems organise and maintain themselves, they grow and reproduce
- 2nd law is still true though as death means entropy wins
how did life start on earth?
it started with simple organic molecules and then more complex molecules (proteins ect) then into cells then are able to reproduce then came the development of complex biological pathways
what is the life timeline?
big bang - 13.8 billion years ago
βearthβ formation - 4.6 billion years ago
βearth and moonβ system formed- 4.5 billion years ago
photosynthesis - 3.5 billion years ago
development of multicellular life
what is the primordial soup theory?
the organic molecules forming oxygen-less world- triggered by UV light
simple gasses mixed in an environment thought to mirror earth
what is the drake equation?
its an equation with lots of different things things required for life
what is the fermi paradox?
its a question asking βwhere is all the life?β
