Russian Revolution
started 1905-1917, series of uprisings that led to the end of the Tsar and the rise of communism as an influential political belief
Iron Curtain
the metaphorical border between Eastern and Western Europe that solidified its rivalry and shaped the dynamics of the Cold War as communism vs. capitalism
Potsdam Conference
1945, conference determined to end WWII and figure out the shape of Europe moving forward, and resulted in the division of Germany between East and West, and increased tensions between all powers involved due to lack of trust
Marshall Plan
1948, the US’s plan to rebuild Western Europe economically by giving out loans to any country who wanted them in order to deter communism from spreading in Europe and increased rivalries between US and USSR
Truman Doctrine
1947, doctrine that started the US policy of containment, that wanted to stop the spread of communism, and got the US involved in world affairs after long period of isolation and divided Europe even more
Berlin Airlift
1948, airlift that unified and showed determination of Western allies to stop Soviet aggression in response to the USSR’s blockade of Berlin
Creation of NATO
1949, the formation of a collective defense alliance among the Western democracies, essentially solidifying the tension and division between the East and the West
