agreed germany + berlin would be split into 4 zones

stalin agreed to free elections in eastern european countries under his control
-poland supposedly under his control with free elections
ideological differences
communism vs capitalism
-both wanted to stop spread of other
democracy vs one party state
western leaders want germany to be developed, capitalist contry
- soviets wanted it to be weakened to prevent further attack and so it could be buffer zone
- also wanted them to pay reparations
importance of satellite states for relations 45-49
stalin breaks promise made at yalta
- only allows favoured communist parties to govern ( not free elections)
- fixed elections tightened soviet grip on EEu
- stalin installs rakosi (also installed someone in Czech rep)
West fear soviet control/ communism would spread further than just eastern europe
