Orientation to Nose and Palate Flashcards
Where does the maxillary artery pass? What arteries does it terminate as?
Pterygomaxillary fissure. It becomes the infraorbital artery and terminates by dividing into the sphenopalatine artery and the descending palatine artery.
What is the otic ganglion innervated by?
Glossopharyngeal nerve
What is the submandibular ganglion & pterygopalatery ganglion innervated by?
Facial nerve
Where do some branches of V2 go?
- Down to the teeth
- Over and up to the lacrimal nerve (to the lacrimal gland)
What supplies the nasal cavity and hard palate?
Maxillary division of the Trigeminal!
What comes into the ptergyopalatine ganglion and runs with every branch of V3? [IMP]
Pre-ganglionic fibers from CN VII - via the greater petrosal nerve and the nerve of the pterygoid canal.
What innervates a small amount of the anterior nasal cavity ?
Sensory branches from nasociliary nerve, a branch of CN V1.
What does the sphenopalatine artery supply?
Much of the nasal mucosa.
What is located in the lateral regions of the hard plate? What can they give rise to? What are they supplied by?
Palatine glands which can give rise to tumors of the mouth. They are supplied by the postganglionic fibers from pterygopalatine ganglion.
What supplies the nasal cavity with blood?
Maxillary artery, ethmoidal artery and facial artery.
Where do most nosebleeds occur?
Anterior nasal septum at Kiesselbach’s area. (blood from sphenopalatine, ethmoidal and superior labial arteries).
What odd thing may Bell’s Palsy influence?
Affects secretions from oral cavity and glands - tear production, saliva production, nasal secretions. The nerves can regenerate but they may get mixed up. (ex: crying when you should salivate upon seeing food)
The ostium of the maxillary sinus opens into the. . .
Middle meatus
What drains into the middle meatus?
- Ethmoidal sinuses
- Frontal sinus
- Maxillary sinus
The nasal septum is formed by. . .
. . .the septal cartilage, the vomer, and the perpendicular plate of the ethmoid bone!
After a car accident, CSF escapes the nose of a patient, what is most likely fracture location?
Ethmoid bone
What innervates the lateral-dorsal and lateral nasal wall mucosa?
CN I and CN V1 and V2.
How and where is mucous moved from the nasal glands?
It’s continuously moved towards the pharynx by cilia.
The nasolacrimal duct communicates in the nasal cavity with the?
Inferior meatus
What innervates (sensory) the bridge of the nose?
Ophthalmic division of trigeminal nerve.
What nerves are in the pterygoid canal? IGNORE
Post-ganglionic sympathetic neurons and pre-ganglionic sympathetic neurons
Where are the cell bodies of parasympathetic neurons innervating the nasal mucosal glands?
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Where are the cell bodies of parasympathetic neurons innervating secretory cells of the lacrimal gland?
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Sensory neurons to the roof of the hard and soft palate have their cell bodies in the:
Trigeminal ganglion
What blood vessel supplies the hard and soft palates?
Maxillary artery
Which of the following nerves innervates the roof of the mouth immediately posterior to the incisor teeth?
Nasopalatine nerve
Where are the post-ganglionic cell bodies of parasympathetic neurons that innervate the secretary cells of the maxillary sinus located?
Pterygopalatine ganglion
Where are the post-ganglionic cell bodies of parasympathetic neurons that innervate the submandibular, sublingual and mucosal glands of the oral cavity located?
Submandibular ganglion
What supplies preganglionic neurons to the pterygopalatine ganglion?
Facial Nerve (CN VII)
Where are the cell bodies of general sensory nerves that travel through the greater and lesser palatine nerves?
Trigeminal ganglion
