Organs of digestion Flashcards
What are the functions of the liver?
Glucose storage
Protein, lipoprotein and cholesterol synthesis
Digestion: production of bile and bile salts
Storage of fat soluble vitamins
Toxin and drug metabolism and excretion
What are the four lobes of the liver called?
Right
Left
Caudate
Quadrate
What is the gallbladder?
A fluid filled sac that stores and concentrates bile
What are the subdivisions of the gallbladder?
Fundus, body, neck
What is the function of the cystic duct in the gallbladder?
Transports bile to and from the gallbladder
What is the Hepatobiliary system?
Concerned with the production and flow of bile
Facts about bile
Produced by hepatocytes in liver
Stored and concentrated in gallbladder
Drains from liver via R+L hepatic duct = forms common hepatic duct
CHD joined by cystic duct = forms common bile duct
Bile from CHD travels up cystic duct to be stored or carry on to the descending duodenum
What is the biliary duct
Common bile duct and cystic duct and R+L hepatic duct together
What is the pancreas
An elongated gland, accessory to GI tract that has both exocrine and endocrine functions
Where does the pancreas lie?
Horizontal across posterior abdominal wall and posterior to stomach
How many regions does the pancreas have?
5:
Uncinate process
Head
Neck
Body
Tail
What do exocrine tissues of the pancreas do?
Release pancreatic juice - a major digestive secretion containing digestive enzymes
How is pancreas controlled?
Autonomic control
Sympathetic stimulation decreases secretions
Parasympathetic stimulation increases secretions
What do endocrine messengers do?
Influence pancreatic secretion
How is pancreatic juice transported?
Via main pancreatic duct to the duodenum
Entrance is controlled by hepatopancreaticsphincter
