Anterior/Posterior
Anterior means the front portion. Posterior means the back portion.
Benign
A non cancerous growth that doesn’t spread.
Caudal/cranial
Contains the brain
Deep/superficial
Deep means away from the surface. Superficial means the surface or near the surface.
Distal/proximal
Distal means furthest from the trunk of the body. Proximal means towards the trunk of the body.
Dorsal/ventral
Dorsal means back. Ventral means the front
Dorsum
The back or posterior surface of a part eg. In the foot, the top
Excision
Surgical removal, cut away, take out
Frontal
Divides the body of body part into front and back portions
Inferior/superior
Inferior means a below or towards the feet. Superior means above or towards the head.
Laurel/medial
Lateral means toward the side of the body, away from the midline. Medial means toward the midline of the body.
Malignant
A cancerous growth that spreads quickly from its original location.
Metastasis
The spread of a cancerous tumour from its original place to a secondary location in the body.
Organ
Group of different tissues working together
Pelvic cavity
Contains the bladder and reproductive organs
Peritoneum
The double membrane that covers the organs in the abdomen
Plantar
Pertaining to the sole of the foot
Prone/supine
Prone means lying face down on the abdomen. Supine means lying face up on the back.
Spinal cavity
Contains the spinal cord nerves.
System
A group of organs working together
Thoracic cavity
Contains the heart, lungs, aorta, and bronchial tubes
Tissue
Similar cells grouped together performing specialized functions
Transverse plane
A horizontal plane dividing the body into upper and lower portions

LUQ
Left upper quadrant
RLQ
Right lower quadrant
RUQ
Right upper quadrant
Abdominal cavity
Contains the liver, gallbladder, spleen, stomach, pancreas, intestines and kidneys
