ORGANIZATION Flashcards
What type of cells are bacteria?
Prokaryotes
They DO NOT have membrane bound organelles.
What do bacteria have?
Cell Membranes, Cell Walls, DNA, Ribosomes
What are the two types of eukaryotic cells?
Animal Cell and Plant Cell
What are organelles?
Specialized structures in cells that perform important cellular functions.
What is nutrition in life functions?
To take in food
What is transport in life functions?
To move materials
What is cell respiration in life functions?
Make Energy: ATP
What is excretion in life functions?
To get rid of waste
What is synthesis in life functions?
To build, to make
What is regulation in life functions?
To control
What is growth in life functions?
To increase in size
What is reproduction in life functions?
To make offspring
What is the function of the cell membrane?
Barrier to protect the cell and controls what comes in and out.
What is the function of the cell wall?
Provides support and protection for the cell and allows materials in and out of the cell.
FOUND IN PLANT CELLS.
What is the function of mitochondria?
Makes energy or ATP from food and oxygen.
What is the function of cytoplasm?
To protect and support the organelles within the cell.
What is the function of the endoplasmic reticulum?
Transportation route of cell.
2 Types: Rough ER (has ribosomes) & Smooth ER
What is the function of the Golgi apparatus?
Labels and packages the proteins, gives them a direction to follow.
What do ribosomes do?
They FORM proteins.
What is the function of vacuoles?
Store materials such as water, salt, proteins, and carbohydrates.
MANY SMALL ONES IN ANIMAL CELLS, AND ONE BIG ONE IN PLANT CELLS.
What is the function of chloroplasts?
Use energy from sunlight to make energy-rich food molecules in a process known as PHOTOSYNTHESIS.
FOUND IN PLANT CELLS!
What is the function of centrioles?
Involved in animal cell division.
FOUND ONLY IN ANIMAL CELLS.
What is the function of the nucleus?
Controls most cell processes and contains the hereditary information - DNA.
What is the function of lysosomes?
Contain enzymes that can break down nutrients and dead organelles.
What are cilia and flagella?
Made of protein and help with the movement of individual cells.
What do plant and animal cells have in common?
Cell Membrane, Cytoplasm, Nucleus, Endoplasmic Reticulum, Ribosome, Mitochondria, Lysosomes, Vacuole
What is a unique feature of animal cells?
Centriole
What is a unique feature of plant cells?
Cell Wall and Chloroplast
