Deductive
A rhetorical device and a way to build a successful argument
Ex. 1 - All spiders have eight legs. A tarantula is a spider. Therefore, tarantulas have eight legs.
Ex. 2 - All dogs scare her. There is a dog. She is scared.
Inductive
Takes a specific representative case or facts and then draws generalizations or conclusions from them
Ex. 1 - I got coffee once at this cafe. It was horrible. So all their coffee must be terrible.
Ex. 2 - I see fireflies in my backyard every summer. So this summer I will see fireflies in my backyard again.
Idea/Example
Words or word phrases that are used to convey meaning, provoke a response from a listener or reader and to persuade during communication
Ex. 1 - A chef coming up with new menu items
Ex. 2 - The employee showing a trainee what not to do in the event of a fire.
Cause/Effect
A logical system that organizes evidence to show how something happened
Ex. 1 - If you don’t study, you won’t get the best grades
Ex. 2 - An oil spilled in water. Many animals and plants died
Description
A rhetorical strategy using sensory details to portray a person, place, or thing
Ex. 1 - Details about someone
Ex. 2 - Details about a place
Process Analysis
A form of technical writing and expository writing “designed to convey to the reader how a change takes place through a series of stages”
Ex. 1 - Sewing patterns
Ex. 2 - Recipies
Narration
A rhetorical mode used to tell a story and describe a scene
Ex. 1 - A story being told by someone who is insane
Ex. 2 - Any story being told
Comparison/Contrast
Looking for similarities and differences between two things
Ex. 1 - Cats and dogs are both mammals
Ex. 2 - Insects have 6 legs, spiders have 8
Exposition
A literary device that is meant to relay background information about a main character, setting, event or other element of the narrative
Ex. 1 - Two lovers that commit suicide because they can’t be together
Ex. 2 - Backstories, flashbacks
Repetition
That involves intentionally using a word or phrase for effect, two or more times in a speech or written work
Ex. 1 - I have a dream speech
Ex. 2 - Hand in hand
Syllogism
A type of deductive reasoning that presents a major premise and a minor premise to guide the reader towards a valid conclusion
Ex. 1 - If she is smart, she will get into a good college.(She is smart. She will get good grades.)
Ex. 2 - All mammals are animals, All elephants are mammals. Therefore all elephants are animals.
