Organisms Exchange Flashcards
What breaks down triglycerides?
Lipase. Decrease triglycerides concentration in gut.
Causes hydrolysis of triglycerides.
Breaking ester bonds.
Why heat samples collected from the gut to study digestion/enzyme action?
To denature enzymes so no further digestion.
Describe the role of micelles in the absorption of fats into the cells lining the ileum.
- Micelles include bike salts and fatty acids.
- micelles make FA more soluble in water
- carry FA to cells lining ileum
- fatty acids absorbed by diffusion
If pressure in the left ventricle is increasing but the blood flow rate is not yet increasing in aorta, what is happening?
Semi lunar valve closed. As pressure in aorta is higher than ventricle
What is the importance of elastic recoil in the aorta?
Smooths the blood flow, maintains rate/pressure of blood
What released in salivary glands?
Salivary amylase
What does amylase do?
Hydrolysed glycosidic bond
Starch (polysaccharide) —> maltose
(Disaccharide)
Where does mechanical breakdown occur?
Mouth - teeth
Oesophagus - peristalsis
Stomach - churning
Why stomach acidic?
To unravel proteins for inc SA
Low pH for stomach enzymes to work
What does liver produce
Bile salts
Where are bile salts stored and released?
Gall bladder
What does the pancreas release/make ?
Amylase released into small int
Lipase made and released into small
Peptidases made
Why is duodenum neutral ?
To allow neutral pH for small int enzymes to work
Absorption of water where?
Large intestine
What is transpiration
Process of water movement through a plant
