Organise Cells Into Tissues, Organs & Organ Systems Flashcards
What’s a tissue defined as
A group of specialised cells which work together to carry out a particular function
What are the 3 types of muscle tissue
Skeletal
Smooth
Cardiac
What do each of the 3 types of muscle tissue do
Skeletal - contract to move bones
Smooth - contract to move substances along tracts
Cardiac - contract to make heart beat & move blood around the body
Adaptations of muscle tissue
Many mitochondria - to release energy for muscle contraction via aerobic respiration
Many blood vessels - provides oxygen & glucose needed for a high rate of aerobic respiration
3 types of cartilage
Hyaline - found in embryos & trachea
Fibrous - found in knee joint & discs between vertebrae
Elastic - found in ears & flap over larynx
Their function is to provide suppoer
Xylem function
Transport mineral ions & water in plants
Phloem function
Transport sugars & amino acids
Structure of xylem
- no cross walls -> continuous hollowed tubes formed
- dead cells with no contents -> easy unimpeded water movements
- lignified walls -> provides strength & support + prevents collapse under tension
Structure of the phloem
-> cells are joined from end to end perforated sieve plates, & few organelles
-> allows easy flow of sugars and amino acids
