long chain of command - more layers of management - narrow span of control - meaning managers can monitor who is below them more closely
flat
short chain of command - wide span of control - difficult to manage employees effectively
centralised
all major decisions made by the top of the heriarchy - meaning policies will be uniform and these people have the most experience and can get an overview of the business
slow down decision making however and comms of decisions can take a long time, meaning the organisation reacts slowly to change
decentralised
authority is shared out - power might be delegated to regional managers or more junior employees -
changes made quicker
inconsistencies can be developed between departments
businesses need to chose the most appropriate structure
can depend on the size of the business - small business is likely to have a flat structure - as the business grows an employes staff the businesses structure will get taller as managers are needed
