Summary:
Organisational Culture consists of 3 levels (iceberg model):
(1) Artefacts (above water level and can be seen)
(2) Values (below water level and can not be seen easily)
(3) Assumptions(below water level and can not be seen easily)
(1) Artefacts:
- Can be seen in an organisation
- Examples: Branding, furniture, job titles, stories about the organisation
(2) Expoused values
- The declared set of values and behaviours expected of its members
- What should be done
- How should it be done
- Which decissions are made
(3) Shared Assumptions:
- The beliefs of the organisation
- They are rarely questioned
- There are 6 Types of assumptions:
- The truth
- the importance of time
- Space - ownership and allocation and respect people give to it
- Human nature:
- Humans are good or bad
- Behaviour is fixed or can be changed
- Relationship with the environment: This created the public perception
- Social power
- Cooperation versus competition
- Style of leadership
If you want to change the culture you have to change the assumptions. If you can’t change the assumptions, you cant change the culture.
