Organisation Of Prokaryotic Cells Flashcards
What are the cell walls of bacteria composed of?
Peptidoglycan.
What are cytoplasmic ‘inclusions’ in bacteria?
These are non membrane bound yet distinct areas of the cell. Examples are:
Gas vesicles surrounded by a protein shell. They play a role in the buoyancy of some aquatic bacteria.
Endospores: dormant structures which can later germinate to produce a new individual.
Glycogen granules: energy reserves.
What is the difference between gram-positive & gram-negative bacteria?
The peptidoglycan layer (cell wall) is much thicker in gram-positive bacteria.
Describe the cell wall of gram-negative bacteria (compared to gram-positive).
They have a much thinner peptidoglycan layer and a periplasmic space between inner and outer membranes.
