Organisation of an Ecosystem Flashcards
the energy for all food chains comes from
sun
ecosystem
interaction between a community of living organisms and their environment.
community
2 or more populations of organisms
population
A group of individuals that belong to the same species and live in the same area
producer
An organism that can make its own food / plants and algae, which photosynthesise.
primary consumer
herbivores, which directly eat producers for energy
secondary consumer
carnivores, which directly eat primary consumers for energy
tertiary consumer
carnivores. They eat secondary consumers for energy
interdependence
very small changes to ecosystems have large consequences, which can be difficult to predict. all the organisms in an ecosystem are dependent upon each other.
competition
plants compete for light, space, water and minerals from the soil. Animals compete for food, mates and their territory. Organisms which have more of these resources tend to grow more healthily and are more likely to have offspring.
interspecific competition
competition between members of different species
intraspecific competition
competition between members of the same species
stable community
Where all the species and environmental factors are in balance so that population sizes remain fairly constant
