Organisation In Plants Flashcards
Which parts of a plant is the reproductive system?
The petals and the flowers.
Which part of the plant is the shoot system?
The stem and the leaves.
What is one adaptation of the upper epidermis?
It is transparent to allow light.
Where is the waxy cuticle in a plant?
In the upper epidermis.
Why is the waxy cuticle in the upper epidermis waxy?
To create water insulation.
What is Lignin?
A very strong polymer found in the Xylem.
What are 2 adaptations of the Xylem?
Lignin that’s makes the Xylem stronger.
It’s Hollow.
What direction does the Xylem travel?
Only upwards in 1 Direction.
What is the function of the Xylem?
To transport Water and Mineral Ions to the leaf.
Explain the mark scheme:
Explain how water is transferred from the root cells to the Xylem.
✅ Transfer of water is Osmosis.
✅ Water evaporates from the leaves.
✅ There is a concentration gradient.
✅ Allows water to travel upwards.
What does transpiration mean for the Xylem?
There is a loss of water from the leaves (and from evaporation).
The concentration gradient is created.
What is transpiration?
The flow of water from the roots, leaves and Xylem.
What are 2 adaptations of the Phloem?
Sieve plates and companion cells.
How many directions do the sugars in the Phloem travel in?
2 directions.
What is there lots of in the Phloem?
Mitochondria (energy) for active transport.
