Organisation Flashcards
What is an organ?
A group of different tissues that work together to perform a certain function.
What is an organ system? Give examples.
A group of organs working together to person a particular function.
Give examples of three tissues?
Muscular tissue, glandular tissue, and epithelial tissue.
What’s a tissue?
A group of similar cells that work together to carry out a particular function. Can include more than one type of cell.
What are enzymes?
Enzymes are biological catalysts which break down food molecules. They are made from folded protein strands.
What is a catalyst?
A substance which increases the speed of a reaction, without being changed or used up in the reaction
What is an active site?
The area on an enzyme where a substrate can be broken down or joined together.
What is the optimum temperature/pH?
The point at which an enzyme can work best. Optimum pH is usually 7, and optimum temp is usually 36 degrees.
What does it mean when an enzyme is ‘denatured’?
Denatured means when the shape of an enzyme’s active site is changed due to high temperature or pH.
What are lipases?
Enzymes that break down lipids into glycerol and fatty acids.
Where can lipases be made?
The pancreas & the small intestine.
What are proteases?
Enzymes that break down proteins into amino acids.
Where can proteases be made?
- The stomach
- The pancreas
- The small intestine
What is amylase?
A type of enzyme that breaks down starch into maltose and other sugars.
Where is amylase made?
- The salivary glands
- The pancreas
- The small intestine
