Organisation Flashcards
What are food tests
Food tests are tests that identify proteins, lipids and carbohydrates
How do you test for proteins lipids and carbohydrates
Protein’s - add biuret reagent to food if positive should turn purple
Sugar- add Benedict’s solution to to the food and if positive it should turn a brownish red colour
Starch - add iodine reagent to food should go from yellow and of black
Fat - add ethanol should go from colourless to white
What are enzymes
Enzymes are proteins that act as biological catalysts by speeding up chemical reactions
What are the 4 enzymes and what do they break down
Carbohydrases - breaks down carbohydrates
Amylase - breaks down starch
Protease - breaks down proteins
Lipases - breaks down lipids
What is the human digestive system
The human digestive system is involved in the digestion and absorption of food by breaking down carbohydrates, proteins and fats into small soluble molecules to be absorbed into the blood
What is every organ in the digestive system
Mouth, oesophagus, liver, stomach, pancreas, large intestines (for liquids), small intestines (for food), salivary glands and anus
What is the heart and blood vessels used for
Blood is pumped from the heart in the arteries, it is then returned to the heart in the veins.
What are the 4 pathogens that cause diseases
Viruses
Bacteria
Fungi
Protists
What are the four human defence systems
Skin - stops pathogens from entering the body
Nose - has internal hairs which act as physical barriers of defence
Trachea and bronchi - they have hairs called cilia which catch pathogens
Stomach - has acid which is used to kill pathogens
What is the response to exercise
Muscles need energy to contract while exercising so the breathing rate increases to bring in more oxygen and get rid of carbon dioxide
What is aerobic and anaerobic respiration
Aerobic respiration is respiration that needs oxygen
Anaerobic respiration is respiration that doesn’t need oxygen
