Geogaraphy Flashcards
What is the structure of a tropical storm
Either side of eye is a tall bank of cloud this is the eyes wall strong winds heavy rain and thunder
Eye is a small area where cold air sinks and warm air rises and conditions are calm here
Beyond the eye wall are further banks of cloud with thunderstorms and tornadoes.
What happens at tectonic plate margins
Constructive plates move away from each other which causes magma to rise - causes mild earthquakes
Destructive plate margin plates move towards each other the oceanic plate subducts under neath the continental plate- friction causes earthquakes and volcanic eruptions
Collision margin is where two plates meet at a destructive margin the crust crumples and lifts to form fold mountains
Conservative margin is where two plates move past each other friction between the two causes earthquakes
What is mitigation
Mitigation: reducing causes of climate change
What are methods of mitigation
Alternative energy- the use of solar power tidal and wave power geothermal power and wind power to reduce greenhouse gasses
Carbon capture - takes co2 from emissions sources and stores it underground an impermeable cap rock presents it from escaping
Afforestation - planting trees help remove co2 from atmosphere through photosynthesis
International agreements - encourage countries to take responsibility in reducing co2 emissions
What is adaptation
Responding and adapting to climate change
What are methods for adaptation
Changes in agricultural systems - required to deal with changing rainfall and temperature patterns
Managing water supplies - ensure populations can face the challenges of changing rainfall patterns. So reducing the demand
Reducing risk from rising sea levels - could invite constructing defence, raising property’s on stilts or relocating people at risk.
