-O-H
Carboxylic acids functional group
C=O-O-H
esters functional group
C=O-O
how is crude oil separated into different hydrocarbon fractions
1 - Oil heated until most of it has turned to gas. Gas enters a fractioning column
2 - When the substances that make up crude oil reach a part of the column where the temp. is lower than their boiling point they condense
3 - longer hydrocarbons = higher boiling points
4 - shorter hydrocarbons = lower boiling points
5 - You end up with crude oil mixture separated out into different fractions. Each fraction contains mixture of hydrocarbons with similar boiling points.
conditions for cracking
- 600-700 degrees
- silica/alumina for catalyst
Alkane general formula
CnH2n+2
are alkenes saturated or unsaturated and why
unsaturated because they can make more bonds (double bond can open up)
is crude oil a renewable or non-renewable source?
non-renewable
what is a homologous series?
a group of compounds that can all be represented by the same general formula
what is a functional group
group of atoms that determine how a compound typically reacts
