Organic Compounds Flashcards
what is a chemical compound
atoms that joing to form compounds
explain organic and inorganic chemical compounds
inorganic - dont contain carbon
organic - contain carbon and are complex
what are 4 organic molecules
carbohydrates, lipids, proteins, nucleic acids
what are the subunits of carbohydrates
composed of polysacharides (many sugars)
subunits - simple sugars called monosaccharides, hydrogen carbon and oxygen
what is an example of a carbohydrate
glycogen - stores excess suagr
what are the subunits of lipids
fatty acids and glycerol (making molecule)
what is the function of lipids
provide energy and structure, store energy
what is an example of lipids
fats - phospholipids in cell membrane, cholesterol like steroids and oil
what are the subunits of proteins
proteins made up of polypeptide chains whose subunits are amino acids (22 different types of amino acids)
explain what a polypeptide chain is (proteins)
different combinations of different amino acids create unique sequences which determine how the chains fold
shapes given by folding determine function
protein function can be reduced or non existent if the amino acid is wrong combo (need right shape to bind)
what is an example of proteins
enzymes - proteins that bind with other molecules
what are the subunits of nucleic acids
nucleotides (3 parts - sugar, phosphate group and nitrogen base)
what is an example of nucleic acids
DNA and mRNA
