Organic Chemistry synthetic routes Flashcards
Mechanism from Alkenes to alkanes
add H2 electrophilic addition with a nickel catalyst
Mechanism from Alkanes to haloalkanes
Free radical substitution with UV light and a hydrogen halide/ halogen.
Mechanism from Alkenes to haloalkanes
Electrophilic addition of hydrogen halide e.g. HBr
Mechanism from Alkenes to alcohols
electrophilic addition with acid catalyst
Mechanism from alcohols to alkenes
Dehydration
Mechanism from alcohols to Ketones
Oxidisation of a secondary alcohol by reflux. heat with K2Cr2O7 (Potassium dichromate) catalyst.
Mechanism from alcohols to aldehydes
primary alcohol oxidisation by distillation heat with K2Cr2O7 (Potassium dichromate) catalyst. or H2SO4
Mechanism from alkenes to polymers
Polymerisation
Mechanism from alcohols to carboxylic acids
Oxidisation of primary alcohol under reflux
Mechanism from alcohols to haloalkanes
Nucleophillic substitution
Mechanism from haloalkanes to alcohols
Nucleophillic substitution
Mechanism from aldehydes to carboxylic acids
Oxidisation under reflux
What does oxidisation through reflux do to primary alcohols?
It forms a carboxylic acid
What does oxidisation through reflux do to secondary alcohols?
It forms a ketone. A k2Cr2O7 catalyst is normally needed though.
