1 & 2 chem basics/equations Flashcards
What does polyatomic mean?
An ion is polyatomic when there are multiple different atoms (elements) making it up
E.g CO^3 or NH^4
How do you use the crossover method?
Al 3+ and 0 2- bond to make Al^2 O^3 because you swap the charges over to give you the numbers of atoms of each element
What is important when a transition metal is put into a compound and the compound is displayed as a word equation?
Include the roman numerals after the transition metal
E.g. Iron (III) oxide
the Roman numerals show the charge on the ion
What is the state of matter of all acids?
Aqueous (aq) which means dissolved in water
Which types of substance are diatomic?
Covalent
Gases
(never metals)
If there is any kind of water on the LHS of an equation, what must be true?
There must be water on the RHS
As pure water or as an aqueous substance
What are the 3 main “lab” acids?
Nitric
Hydrochloric
Sulfuric
Metal + acid –>
Metal salt + H^2
Metal + water –>
Metal hydroxide + H^2
Metal carbonate + acid –>
Metal salt + carbon dioxide + water
