Organic Chemistry Part 1 Flashcards
1
Q
What is a hydrocarbon?
A
A compound made up of only hydrogen and carbon atoms
2
Q
General formula of alkanes:
A
Hn C2n+2
3
Q
What is a homologous series?
A
Same general formula
Same functional group
Trend in physical properties
Same chemical properties
4
Q
What is a functional group?
A
A group of atoms that determine how a compound typically reacts
5
Q
Names of the first 6 alkanes (by number of carbon atoms):
A
1 methane 2 ethane 3 propane 4 butane 5 pentane 6 hexane
6
Q
What are isomers?
A
Molecules with the same molecular formula but different structural formula (arranged differently)
7
Q
What is crude oil made up of?
A
A mixture of different hydrocarbons
8
Q
Steps of fractional distillation:
A
- The crude oil is heated up until most of it has evaporated into gas.
- The gases enter a fractionating column (the liquid part, bitumen, is drained off at the bottom)
- The longer hydrocarbons, which have the higher boiling points, condense and drain out early on, near the bottom.
- The shorter hydrocarbons with lower boiling points condense into liquid further up the column, where it’s cooler
