what is a homologous series?
a series of organic compounds having the same functional group but with each successive member differing by CH2
what is aliphatic?
a compound containing carbon and hydrogen joined together in straight chains, branched chains or non-aromatic rings
what is aromatic?
a compound containing a benzene ring
what is alicylic?
an aliphatic compound arranged in non-aromatic rings with or without side chains
what is meant by saturated?
single carbon-carbon bonds only
what is meant by unsaturated?
presence of multiple carbon-carbon bonds, C=C and C triple bonds and aromatic rings
what is the general formula for alkyls?
CnH2n+1
what is a functional group?
a group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
what is the general formula for carboxylic acids?
CnH2n+1COOH
why would alkenes be less soluble in water than alcohols?
- alkenes don’t contain a hydroxyl groups
- doesn’t form hydrogen bonds with water
what is the general formula for cycloalkanes?
