Organic Chemistry Definitions Flashcards
Structural Formula
Formula that shows relative positions of the atoms in a molecule
E.g propane =CH3CH(OH)CH3
Homologous series
Series of compounds with the same functional group, general formula and each member differs from the next by a CH2 group
Displayed formula
All of the atoms and bonds are shown
Skeletal formula
Carbons shown by zigzag lines. Each end of a line and angle represents a carbon atom
Homolytic fission
Bond breaks and one electron goes to each atom
Heterolytic fission
Bond breaks and two electrons go to one atom resulting in +ve and -ve charged ions
Substitution
When an atom or group of atoms is replaced by another atom or groups of atoms
Addition
When two molecules react together to form a single product
Free radical
Species that has a single unpaired electron
Electrophile
Species that seeks out electron dense areas and accepts electrons
Isomers
Tow or more compound with the same molecular formula
Geometric isomers
When there is a C=C in the molecule with two different groups attached to each carbon
