Organic Chemistry Flashcards
What is a hydrocarbon?
Compound made only from carbon and hydrogen.
Bonds are single = saturated
Bonds are double/triple = unsaturated
What are alkanes?
Family of hydrocarbons containing only one single bond
Alkane formula?
Cn H2n+2
Substitution reactions?
One or more of chlorine or fluorine (gas so F2) atoms switches place with a hydrogen, and forms alkane with three hydrogens and F plus HF
What are alkenes?
Family of hydrocarbons with only one double bond
Alkene formula?
Cn H2n
Homologous series?
Each successive member differs from the one before it by CH2
Addition reactions?
Hydrogen or halogen attacks double bond and breaks it. Alkenes join together to form long polymers
What are alkynes?
Family of hydrocarbons containing one triple bond.
Alkyne formula?
Cn H2n-2
Cyclic hydrocarbons?
Benzene, C6H6 crude oil
Three single bonds and three double bonds. Hexagonal.
What are isomers?
Organic molecule sharing the same molecular formulae but different structural formula
What is organic chemistry?
The systematic study of the compounds of carbon. Compromise over 90% of all known chemicals.
