What is physical development?
Biological change, body and brain continually changing. Puberty, menopause and old age. Affects psychological change
What is cognitive development?
The development of mental capabilities thorough out lifespan
Social and emotional development?
Develop ability to regulate emotions, develop swede of self and expand social networks.
Infancy changes?
Brain: 25% of adult at birth , 50% of adult at six months , 75% at end of infancy.
Not born with good eyesight. Communication and understanding language are feats and visual perception assists thinking, problem solving and memory.
Aware of existence. Start to pretend play.
Childhood changes?
Brain: 90% of adult at five years of age. Preferred hand, physical growth slows and motor skills continue to improve.
Cerebral hemispheres are more specialised, thinking is guided by perception. Thinking, memory and problem-solving improve.
Acquisition to gender roles, more independent, stable same sex friendships form
Adolescent changes?
Puberty brings hormonal and physical changes. Most change in prefrontal cortex, last area to improve is amygdala. Neural connections become more efficient.
Display higher order thinking, becomes logical and sophisticated, brain matures = poor decisions and risks
Self esteem and image, dealing with emotions and close friendships, changes in thinking, interests, expectation and sexual awareness
Early adulthood changes?
Body at peak. Neural network of brain is efficient. Reactive and perceptual skills at peak.
Sophisticated cognitive skills lead to area of expertise. Thinking becomes rational and stable. Expert in some area.
Work on self identity, intimacy and independence are important adjustment to new roles: marriage, parenthood and world
Middle age changes?
Wearing glasses, menopause, high blood pressure
Peak expertise in particular field, greater problem-solving abilities, and creative abilities.
Develop relationships with adult children, midlife crisis, possible divorce
Old age changes?
Biological and physical decline continues, neurones degenerate hair loss
Memory loss, knowledge deteriorates, forgetful and slow. Acquire wisdom
In loved in community, sharing bonds with grand kids, explore interests and travel
Infancy?
0-2 years of age
