Organic Chemistry Flashcards
unique nature of C atom
- teravalency
- catenation
define catenation
tendency of an element to form chains of identical atoms
types of organic compounds
hydrocarbons (aliphatic- saturated and unsaturated, cyclic- homocyclic and heterocyclic)
saturated compound
single bond
unsaturated compound
double or triple bond between C atoms
cyclic compounds
contain three or more C atoms in their molecules
AKA carbocyclic compounds
alicyclic compounds
ringed carbon compounds containing three or more atoms of carbon arranged in a closed structure
aromatic compounds
contain at least one benzene rings in their molecules. (benzene has 6 carbon atoms have single bond and double bond alternating)
define homologous series
is a group of organic compounds having a similar structure and similar chemical properties in which the successive compounds differ by a CH2 group
ex: alkane, alkene, alkyne
characteristics of homologous series
- all members have general formula same
- each member differs from the preceding one by the addition of CH2 group by molecular mass 14
- chemical properties remain same
- increase in molecular wt. down a series
significance of homologous series
- nature of any member of that family can be found, if one is known
- helps to predict the properties of those compounds that are yet to be prepared
define nomenclature
system of assigning names to organic compounds
define alkyl group
obtained after removing one atom of hydrogen from alkane molecule
