Organic chemistry Flashcards
what is a fuel
a substance which when burned, releases heat energy
what are examples of fossil fuels
- petroleum
- coal
- natural gas
what are organic compounds
carbon compounds that come from leaving things
what are hydrocarbons
organic compounds that only contain carbon and hydrogen
what is needed for fossil fuels to form
- heat
- pressure
- NO oxygen
- remains of living organisms that lived millions of years ago
what is petroleum
also know as crude oil, is a complex mixture of hydrocarbons which also contains natural gas
it is a thick, sticky, black liquid that is found under porous rock
what is refining petroleum
when petroleum gets separated into different groups of compounds of similar size
this is carried out by fractional distillation
the groups of fractions are called fractions
why does fractional distillation work
because compounds have different boiling points
name the fraction names in order
- refinery gas
- gasoline
- naphtha
- kerosene (paraffin)
- diesel oil (gas oil)
- fuel oil
- lubricating fraction
- bitumen
