Organic Chem Gloasssry Flashcards
Hydrocarbon
Consists of entirely hydrogen and carbon
Saturated + unsaturated
Saturated= only single carbon, carbon bonds Unsaturated= at least 1 double or triple carbon-carbon bond
Aliphatic
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in unbranched or branched chains, or non-aromatic rings
Alicyclic
Carbon atoms are joined to each other in ring ( cyclic) structures, with or without branches
Aromatic
Some or all of the carbon atoms are found in a benzene ring
Structural isomers
Where 2 or more organic compounds have the same molecular formulas but different structures
Chain isomers
Same molecular formula but different atomic arrangements or branches
Position isomers
Have the same carbon skeleton and the same functional group, but differ from each other in the location of the functional group in/on the carbon chain
Functional group isomers
Same molecular formula but the atoms are rearranged to give a different functional group( the name of the molecule changes too)
Electrophoresis
An atom or group of atoms that is attracted to an electron rich centre and accepts an electron pair. They are usually positive ions or a molecule containing an atom with a partial positive charge
