Organic Chapter 4: Organic Analysis Flashcards
How can you test for different types of alcohols?
Oxidise them with acidified potassium dichromate
Primary - orange solution goes green
Secondary - Orange solution goes green
Tertiary - remians orange
Tell between Primary & secondary by using tollen’s reagent, distill the product & the reagent will form a silver mirror if the alcohol is secondary
How do you test for carboxylic acids?
Add sodium carbonate & bubble the gas through some limewater. If the limewater goes cloudy, there is a carboxylic acid.
What analytical technique can be used to help identify any compound?
Mass Spectrometry
What forms does high resolution Mass spectrometry take?
C-NMR, H-NMR, and Infrared Spectroscopy
