Organic and Inorganic + Human Effects on the Environment Flashcards
What are organic substances?
Organic substances are compounds that contain carbon. (Acetone)
What are inorganic substances?
Inorganic substances are compounds that do not contain carbon. (Borax)
What are the organic nutrients?
The organic nutrients are;
Carbohydrates- Carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen. (sugar, starches, and fibers).
Lipids (Fats)- Large compounds of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen. (Butter, Oil and Meats).
Proteins-Contains atoms of carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen. (Eggs, Meat, and Nuts)
Nucleic Acids-Large complicated molecules found in living things that contribute to heredity and cells’ activities. (RNA and DNA)
What are the human effects on the environment/air pollution?
- Sulfur Dioxide(Forms smog & acid rain. Caused by industries.)
- Nitrogen Oxide(Fuel combustion from vehicles and oil refineries)
- Carbon Monoxide(Known as the silent killer as it is an odorless and colorless gas. Combustion of vehicles and forest fires.)
- Ground Level Ozone(Gas at ground level is dangerous. Negative effects on people with lung problems, as well as the elderly)
What are greenhouse gases?
Atmospheric gases that trap heat
Water vapor, carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxides are examples.
What is global warming?
It’s a worldwide temperature increase.
Greenhouse effect+ Enhanced Greenhouse effect?
Greenhouse effect is important because the gases in the air trap heat from the sun. The enhance greenhouse effect is because of the human activity that trapping more gases increasing the temperature.
What is the ozone layer? Why is it depleting?
The ozone layer is a shield of gas that prevents too much ultraviolet radiation from seeping through the Earth’s atmosphere. If it’s deleting, it’s letting more ultraviolet radiation seep through. it’s depleting because of, aerosol sprays, air conditioners, fridges, and automobiles. Ozone depletion occurs faster in colder temperatures, that why the rate of depletion in Antartica is way worse.
How do you measure air quality?
You measure the air quality by measuring levels of pollutants in the air or estimating the amount of pollutants in the air.
What is the effect of fertilizer on the environment?
Some of these impacts include algae blooms causing the depletion of oxygen in surface waters, pathogens and nitrates in drinking water, and the emission of odors and gases into the air. Nutrients from manure and fertilizers enter lakes and streams through runoff and soil erosion.
What is acid rain and how does it affect the environment?
Acid gases are produced when fossil fuels like coal and oil are burned in power stations, factories and in our own homes.
Most of these acid gases are blown into the sky and when they mix with the clouds it can cause rain (or snow, sleet, fog, etc.) to become more acidic
Acid rain can also corrode sharp edges and carvings. It can also cause slower growth, injury or death of trees.
