Dispersion+Dilution+Biomagnification+LD50+DDT and Pollutants + Leachate and Groundwater Flashcards
What is LD50
LD50 stand for lethal dose. It’s the amount of substance that causes 50% of animals to die if they are given a specific dose all at once.
What is dispersion?
Dispersion is the scattering of a substance away from it’s source. Like spreading fertilizer on your lawn.
What is dilution?
Dilution is when you reduce the concentration of a pollutant by mixing it the pollutant with large quantities of air and water. Like putting one drop of bleach into a sink full of water.
What is biomagnification?
Biomagnification is the increase of a concentration of a chemical or element as it moves up the food chain.
What is DDT?
DDT is a common element that biomagnifies, and it was a pesticide that was used in the 1940’s and 50’s. DDT travels up through the food chain and increases in concentration.
What is groundwater?
Water from rainfalls sinks into the soil and through two zones. Which are;
Aeration zones-Where both air and water are in the soil.
Groundwater zone-This the soil where there is only water.
The boundary between the two zones is called Water Table.
What is leachate?
Leachate is when water soaking the soil, and moving downwards dissolves the substance in the soil and carries it along.
For ex; Pollutants from contaminated, soil leach into the groundwater. Leaching at a Landfill.
What is Photolysis?
The breakdown of compounds by light.
For ex; photodegradable plastic, it won’t work if it’s buried.
What is the rate of biodegradation?
- Temperature
- Soil Moisture
- Soil Ph
- Oxygen Supply
- Nutrient Availability
- Planting Vegetation
