Acids and Bases + Ph Flashcards
What are acids? What’s an example of an acid?
Acids are corrosive, have a sour taste, and they release hydrogen ions when placed in water. An example is lemon and lime.
What are bases? What’s an example of a base?
Bases have a slippery/soapy feel, they have a bitter taste, and they release hydroxide ions when placed in water. An example is, drain cleaner, and ammonia.
What does Ph stand for? How do you use it?
Ph stands for “potential hydrogen”. The more H* the more acidic it is.
Acids have a Ph ranging from 0-6.
Bases have a Ph ranging from 8-14.
Neutral Substance have a Ph ranging of 7.
How do you neutralize acids in the environment?
The stronger the acid, the stronger the base you need to use to neutralize it. You can use limestone (natural calcium carbonate), for lakes contaminated by acid rain.
