Organic Flashcards
Why do branched-chain isomers have lower boiling points?
There is a smaller surface area/there is less surface contact between molecules meaning there are less London forces so branched isomers require less energy to break
During fractional distillation why are there a large number of products formed?
Difference in boiling points mean products separate off at different stages
Define homologous series
Same functional group
Same chemical/physical properties
What is a primary, secondary and tertiary alcohol?
Primary - attached to 1 carbon - on the end of a chain
Secondary - attached to 2 carbons - in the middle of a chain
Tertiary - attached to 3 carbons - in the middle with methyl group
What makes a compound unsaturated?
Double bond
Define stereoisomers
Same molecular formula different arrangement of atoms in space
