Q

What is a stereoisomer?

Q

What is the difference between E/Z isomers?

A

Z isomer - stands for zusammen, means together (zee zame zide)
E isomer - stands for entgegen, means opposite (enemies)

Q

What are Cis/Trans isomers?

A

Special case of E/Z isomerism if there is a double bond present and if different groups are attached to each carbon BUT one atom on each of these must be a hydrogen

Q

How do we name an isomer if all the groups are different?

A

Find the Mr of each compound. Place them in order of priority. If the two highest priority are on the same side of a double bond then it is a Z isomer and vice versa
