Isomers Flashcards
What is a structural isomer?
An isomer with the same molecular formula but a different structural formula
What is a chain isomer?
An isomer which occurs when the carbon chain is arranged differently
What are the types of structural isomers?
Chain
Position
Functional group
What is a a functional group isomer?
Occur when compounds have a different functional group
What is a functional group?
A group of atoms responsible for the characteristic reactions of a compound
What is an isomer?
Same molecular formula and a different structure
What is a stereoisomer?
Isomers are molecules that have the same structural formula, but have a different arrangement of the atoms in space.
Give the types of stereoisomer?
E/Z isomer
Cis/Trans isomer
What is the difference between E/Z isomers?
Z isomer - stands for zusammen, means together (zee zame zide)
E isomer - stands for entgegen, means opposite (enemies)
What is the difference between Cis/Trans isomer?
Cis - H on the same side
Trans - H on opposite sides
What are Cis/Trans isomers?
Special case of E/Z isomerism if there is a double bond present and if different groups are attached to each carbon BUT one atom on each of these must be a hydrogen
How do we name an isomer if all the groups are different?
Find the Mr of each compound. Place them in order of priority. If the two highest priority are on the same side of a double bond then it is a Z isomer and vice versa
What is a position isomer?
An isomer which occurs when functional group is on a different carbon atom
