Alkanes Flashcards

1
Q

What is the different between complete and incomplete combustion?

A

Complete combustion is when there is enough oxygen, incomplete is when there isn’t which may result in the production of carbon monoxide

Q

Give a hazard of incomplete combustion

A

Production of carbon monoxide means when breathed in, it attaches to haemoglobin and takes other place of oxygen causing internal suffication

Q

Why do cycloalkanes have higher boiling points?

A

They contain more van der waals so more kinetic energy is required to break these bonds

Q

What are alkanes?

A

Main components of natural gas and crude oil. They are very unreactive and are mainly used In fuels to generate heat when reacted with oxygen

10
Q

What is a sigma bond?

A

A bond in which each carbon atom is joined to 4 other atoms

It is the result of two overlapping orbitals, one from each bonded atom

Q

What is the effect of chain length on boiling point?

A

The greater the chain length the higher the boiling point because more surface contact results in more VdW’s so more energy is required to break them

12
Q

What is the effect of branching on boiling point?

A

More branching results in a lower boiling point as there is less surface contact so there are less VdW’s forces and thus less energy is required

14
Q

Why is a hydrocarbon non-polar?

A

The electronegativity difference between C and H is so similar that it can be considered non-polar

16
Q

What is the shape of alkanes?

A

Tetrahedral shape because it contains 4 electron pairs in 4 sigma bonds which all have equal repulsion. It has free rotation

17
Q

Define homologous series

A

A series with the same functional group and same general formula

18
Q

Define functional group

A

An atom or group of atoms which are responsible for the chemical properties of a compound

19
Q

How do you calculate atom economy?

A

(Mr of desired products / total Mr of all products) X 100
