Organelles In Plants Flashcards
What is cell wall and what is it made of
Formed outside the cell membrane and offer structural support to the cell made by the polysaccharide cellulose
What is middle lamella
Forms the outermost layer of the plant cell and acts like glue to stick adjacent plant cells together and provides stability to the plant
What are plasmodesmata
Narrow threads of cytoplasm (surrounded by a cell membrane) connecting the cytoplasm of neighbouring plant cells which allows substances to be transported between plant cells and facilitates cell to cell communication
What are pits
Very thin regions of cell wall, pits in adjacent plant cells are lined up in pairs which facilitates the transport of substances between cells
Are chloroplasts larger or smaller than ribosomes
Larger
What are chloroplasts surrounded by
A double membrane
Where are chlorophyll found and what do they form
In membrane-bound compartments called thylakoids stack to form structures called grana (singular=granum)
What are grana joined together by
Joined together by lamellae (thin and flat thylakoid membranes)
Where is site of photosynthesis
Certain parts occur in thylakoid membranes while other parts happen in the stroma
What do chloroplasts also contain
Contain small circular pieces of DNA and ribosomes used to synthesise proteins needed in chloroplasts replication and photosynthesis
Why are chloroplasts green
Due to presence of pigment chlorophyll
What are amyloplasts
Small membrane bound organelles containing starch granules
-responsible for storing starch in plants and converting it back to glucose when the plant needs it
