Organ Systems Flashcards
1
Q
Integumentary System
A
- Protects the body as a whole from the external environment.
- Aids in regulation of body temperature.
- Produces Vitamin D
Ex: Skin, hair, and nails; cutaneous sense organs and glands
2
Q
Skeletal System
A
- Body support and protection of internal organs.
- Provides a framework.
- Cavities provide a site for blood cell formation
- Bones store minerals: Calcium & Phosphorus
Ex: Bones, cartilages, tendons, ligaments, and joints
3
Q
Muscular System
A
- Allows manipulation of the environment.
- Locomotion
- Facial expression
- Maintains posture
- Produces heat
4
Q
Nervous System
A
- Fast acting control system
- Responds to internal & external changes (hot? wet? cold?)
- Activates muscles & glands
- Helps maintain homeostasis of the body via rapid transmission of electrical signals.
Ex: Brain, spinal cord, nerves, and sensory receptors
5
Q
Endocrine System
A
- Helps maintain body homeostasis
- Promotes growth & development
- Secrete hormones
Ex: Pituitary, thymus, thyroid, parathyroid, adrenal, and pineal glands; ovaries, testes, and pancreas
6
Q
Cardiovascular System
A
- Transport system that carries oxygen, carbon dioxide, nutrients, wastes, ions, hormones, etc. to and from the tissue cells.
- Blood is moved through the blood vessels by the pumping action of the heart.
Ex: Heart and blood vessels
7
Q
Lymphatic System
A
- Picks up fluid leaked from blood vessels and returns it to the blood.
- Cleanses blood of pathogens and other debris
- Houses lymphocytes (WBC’s) that act via the immune response to protect the body from foreign substances.
Ex: Lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, spleen, and thymus
8
Q
Respiratory System
A
- Keeps blood supplied with oxygen while removing carbon dioxide.
- Gaseous exchanges through walls of the air sacs of the lungs.
- Contributes to the acid-base balance of the blood
Ex: Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
9
Q
Digestive system
A
- Breaks down food into absorbable units for nutrients to enter the blood.
- Waste is eliminated as feces.
Ex: Oral cavity, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small and large intestines; teeth, salivary glands, liver, and pancreas
10
Q
Urinary System
A
- Eliminates nitrogenous wastes like urea, uric acid, and ammonia.
- Maintains water, electrolyte, and acid-base balance of food.
Ex: Kidneys, ureters, bladder, and urethra
11
Q
Male Reproductive System
A
- Provides gametes called sperm.
- Male sex hormone: Testosterone
- Ducts & glands aid in delivery of sperm
Ex: Testes, prostate gland, scrotum, penis, and duct system
12
Q
Female Reproductive System
A
- Provides gametes called eggs
- Uterus houses the developing fetus until birth
- Mammary glands provide nutrition for the infant (Milk)
Ex: Ovaries, uterine tubes, uterus, mammary glands, and vagina
