Organ System Interview Flashcards
(22 cards)
- Skin and its appendages (nail, hairs, glands)
- Skin is also called “Integument”
- forms the external part of our body
Integumentary System
Integumentary System
Six Functions:
- waterproofs the body
- cushions & protects deeper tissues from injuries
- produces vitamin D w/ help of sunlight
- excrete salt in perspiration
- help regulate body temp
- location of cutaneous nerve receptors
- bones, cartilages, ligaments, and joints
- supports the body
- protects the organs (skull protecting the brain and the rib cage protecting the lungs and heart)
- provide muscle attachment for movement
- site of blood formation
- stores minerals
Skeletal System
- major function is movement
- produces heat during extraneous activity
- produces movement of bones or allows locomotion
- skeletal muscles contract (or shorten)
- maintains posture
- mobility of body as a whole reflects the activity of skeletal muscles (the largely fleshy muscles attached to the bones)
Muscular System
Muscular System
Three Kinds of Muscles
- Skeletal Muscles
- Cardiac Muscles
- Visceral organs (laman loob)
- control system
- brain, spinal cord, nerves and sensory receptors
- responds to internal and external stimuli
- sensory receptors detect changes and send messages to the Central Nervous System (CNS)
- CNS assesses information & activates effectors (muscles & glands)
Nervous System
secretes chemical molecules called hormones into the blood
Endocrine System
Endocrine System
3 body functions controlled by hormones:
- Growth
- Reproduction
- Use of nutrients
Endocrine System
Eight Endocrine Glands
- Pituitary
- Thyroid
- Parathyroid
- adrenal
- Thymus
- Pancreas
- Pineal
- Ovaries (for females) and Testes (for males)
- Primary organs are the HEART and BLOOD VESSELS
- Heart - pumps blood
- Vessels - transport blood to tissues
Cardiovascular System
What are the Three things that Blood Transport?
- Oxygen and Carbon Dioxide
- Nutrients
- Hormones
Cardiovascular System
contains WBC and chemicals to provide what?
protection from foreign invaders
- lymphatic vessels, lymph nodes, lymphoid organs
- complements the cardiovascular system by returning leaked fluids back to the bloodstream
- Lymph nodes and other lymphoid organs (spleen and tonsils) cleanse blood
- houses WBC, involved in immunity
Lymphatic System
gases are exchanged w/ blood through air sacs in lungs
Respiratory System
Respiratory System
Six parts
nasal passages, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, and lungs
- a tube running through the body from mouth to anus
- breaks down food
- allows nutrient absorption into blood
- eliminates indigestible material as feces
Digestive system
Digestive system
includes:
- Oral Cavity
- Esophagus
- stomach
- Small and Large Intestine
- Rectum
- Accessory organs
- called excretory system
- Kidneys, Ureters (passage of Urine), urinary bladder (temp storage of urine), urethra (exit passage of urine)
- eliminates nitrogenous wastes
- maintains acid-base balance
- regulates water and electrolyte balance
- helps regulate normal BP
Urinary System
Reproductive System
male include: (5)
- Testes
- Seminal Vesicles
- Prostate gland
- Scrotum
- Penis
Reproductive System
female include: (4)
- Ovaries
- Mammary glands (breast)
- Uterine/ Fallopian tube
- Vagina
Reproductive System
Gametogenesis
production of sperm cells
Spermatogenesis
Reproductive System
Gametogenesis
production of egg cells
Oogenesis/Ovogenesis
