Order Trichurida Flashcards
*All with direct life-cycles
*Most species cosmopolitan
*Adults in large intestine,
rectum, caecum of mammals
*elongate (thread-like) at
anterior end, becoming thick
posteriorly
*stichosome present
*Eggs with bipolar plugs (50-55
x 22-23 um)
Trichuris sp.
hemorrhaging occurs as whipworms
penetrate into the submucosal region and feed on
blood. Fatalities common in children.
Chronic anemia
worms cause loss of muscle tone
in wall of rectum and it everts out the anus; whipworms
are often seen attached to the rectal tissue
rectal prolapase
Treatment for whipworms
mebendazole
*World’s largest intracellular parasite
*Adults intramulticellular in intestinal epithelium
*Larvae reside in skeletal muscle fiber
*Host serves both as definitive and intermediate host
*males 1.4-1.6 mm long; slender
*females 3-4 mm long; slender
Trichinella sp.
Pathology of trichinella
- Misdiagnosed as flue
- Larval migration
- penetration and encystment in skeletal muscles
- calcification
Treatment of trichinella
- Thiabendazole/ albendazole- adults in the intestine
- Mebendazole- invasive and encysted larval forms
- Prednisone- Inflammation of infected tissues
- Many drugs are effective against adults, but trichinosis
is not suspected until larvae are in the muscles.
