Sterile bood cultures, media tubes yellow topped tube

A
  • Contains acd or sps
  • If patient comes with a fever of UNO; doctor might order blood culture on them
  • Try not to contaminate the specimen with microorgamis om the skin; this is why it’s important for skin to be disinfected
  • Use vacuum system to avoid contamination
  • Vial should be gently inverted 8 times imeddietly after collection
  • Each culture tube requires 10 ml in each ottle

Light blue topped tube

A
  • Used for prothrombin time (PT)
  • Use this test to see how thin their blood is
  • Additive is : sodium citrate
  • ALWAYS make sure to adequately fill this tube
  • After spinning the tube, plasma formed, tube should be inverted 3-4 times

Serum separator tubes sst

  • Tube can be gold, specled red/gray (tiger top), or red and black
  • Some contain no additive, some contain a clot activator, serum tubes must be allowed to clot for 30 minutes; prior to centrifugation
  • Serum tubes are used to perform chemistry blood collections (CMP, BMP, HEPATIC, LIPS, ETC)

  • Blood will never clot
  • Used for hematology
  • Inverted 8to 10 times
  • Used for CBC (complete blood counts) should never be centrifuged
    o Cause break of platelets
