order of draw Flashcards
1
Q
Sterile bood cultures, media tubes yellow topped tube
A
- Contains acd or sps
- If patient comes with a fever of UNO; doctor might order blood culture on them
- Try not to contaminate the specimen with microorgamis om the skin; this is why it’s important for skin to be disinfected
- Use vacuum system to avoid contamination
- Vial should be gently inverted 8 times imeddietly after collection
- Each culture tube requires 10 ml in each ottle
2
Q
Light blue topped tube
A
- Used for prothrombin time (PT)
- Use this test to see how thin their blood is
- Additive is : sodium citrate
- ALWAYS make sure to adequately fill this tube
- After spinning the tube, plasma formed, tube should be inverted 3-4 times
3
Q
Serum separator tubes sst
A
- Tube can be gold, specled red/gray (tiger top), or red and black
- Some contain no additive, some contain a clot activator, serum tubes must be allowed to clot for 30 minutes; prior to centrifugation
- Serum tubes are used to perform chemistry blood collections (CMP, BMP, HEPATIC, LIPS, ETC)
4
Q
RAPID SERUM TUBES rst
A
Orange tube
STAT collection
Only need to clot 5 min
5
Q
RED TOPPED TUBE
A
- Used for discard tubes and drugmonitoring
- No gel at bottom which can effect some drug related test
- After blood has clotted spun down to create serum
6
Q
LAVENDER TOPPED TUBES
A
- EDTA
- Blood will never clot
- Used for hematology
- Inverted 8to 10 times
- Used for CBC (complete blood counts) should never be centrifuged
o Cause break of platelets
7
Q
PINK TOPPED TUBES
A
- Blood banking
- Edta
- Cross match, type and screen
- 8-10 invert
8
Q
GRAY TOPPED TUBES
A
- Used for glucose studies
- Additive: potassium ocalate and sodium floride.
- The ant glyolic agent and inhibitor = terms for tube additive= slows down chemical processs of glucose breakdown
9
Q
LIGHT YELLOW TOPPED TUBES
A
- Contains ACD = acid citrus dextrose
- Used for blood collections ie dna
10
Q
ROYAL OR DARK BLUE TOPPED TUBES
A
- Free of element contamination
o Lead testing, trace element testing, etc - Contain edta, sodium citrate, heparin serum tubes
- Labelo tube will indicate what additive it contains
