collection methods Flashcards
what is the safest method of collection
vacutainer method or vacuum (evacuated tube)
what does vacutainer method involve
tube, double sided needle, and a plastic holder
how does vacutainer method work
blood flows directly into tube which limits contact of blood, blood stops on own, tube has fill line.
before removing needle make sure
tube is full
When is butterfly method used
when patient has fragile,or small veins (pg 58)
when patients veins are bigger use a
syringe
syringe and hypodermic needle
-syringe and hypodermic needle
-When using syringe always break seal by pulling slightly back on the plunger
-Make sure it has no air before inserting it into vein
-Always use a transfer device to transfer the blood from the syringe to the tubes
vacutainer and syringe gauge are
21-22
butterfly gauge
23 guage
higher the guage
smaller the needle
what should you always do in front of the patient
open all needles and syringes
What should the bevel always be when performing a venipuncture in antecubital region
always be up
what angle should u insert needle
15-30 degrees; deeper vein greater the angle, do not exceed more than 30 degrees
if the needle is inserted more than 30 degrees what happens
nerve injury
how many degrees should u insert needle in dorsal hand blood collection
10 degrees; shallower angle because of the amount of tendons and nerves in hand
