Orbital Nodes & Radial Distribution Function Flashcards
What is a node (Ψ)?
A specific region in an atom where the probability of finding an electron is 0 (the Schrodinger Equation = 0)
How to find the number of nodes
Number of nodes = n-1
What are the two types of nodes?
Angular (ℓ) and radial ((n-1)-ℓ)
Angular node = __
ℓ
Radial node = __
(n-1) - ℓ
What is the total number of nodes in the 1s orbital?
(n-1) = 1-1 = 0
Radial distribution
Tells you, if you move in any direction, the probability of finding an electron in that specific r or distance
