Bonds Flashcards
1
Q
When do chemical bonds form?
A
When the arrangement of nuclei and electrons of the bonded atoms results in a lower energy (more negative) than for separate atoms
2
Q
Types of chemical bonds
A
- Ionic
- Covalent
- Polar covalent
3
Q
Ionic bonds
A
- Involve the complete transfer of one or more electrons between two atoms
- Bonding results from electrostatic attraction between the cation and anion
- E.g. NaCl and MgCl2
4
Q
Covalent bonds
A
- Pair of electrons shared between two atoms
- E.g. Cl2, H2
5
Q
Polar covalent bond
A
- An unequal sharing of electrons between two atoms with different electronegativities
- E.g. CO, OH
6
Q
Dissociation energy (ΔEd)
A
Energy required to separate bonded atoms (indicates bond strength)
