Layers of Eyelid
- Skin (sebaceous glands, sweat glands)
- Subcutaneous (sebaceous glands)
- Orbicularis oculi (palpebral part)
- Orbital Septum (continuous w/ periosteum)
Tarsal Plate (glands prevent evaporation of tears)
Levator Palpebrae superioris (lifts eyelid) - Conjunctiva (b/w cornea and eyelids)
Sty
Blockage of sebaceous gland in eyelid
Chalazion
Blockage of tarsal gland in eyelid
Drainage of tears
Tears flow from lacrimal gland across eye to Lacrimal puncta
Pass through lacrimal canaliculi to lacrimal sac
Finally passes through nasolacrimal duct to the inferior meatus of nasal cavity
Lacrimal gland innervation
Facial Nerve
Prevents excessive rotation of eye
Tenon’s capsule
Medial rectus
Adducts eye
*CN III
Lateral rectus
Abducts eye
*CN VI
Superior rectus
Raises eye
Adducts eye
Medial rotation
*CN III
Inferior Rectus
Lowers eye
Abducts eye
Lateral rotation
*CN III
Superior oblique
Abducts eye
Lowers eye
Medial rotation
CN IV
Inferior oblique
Raises eye
Abducts eye
Lateral rotation
*CN III
Occlusion of central artery of retina
Blindness
Papilledema
engorgement of retinal veins
Increased CSF around optic nerve
Decreased vision; headaches
-Insidious onset
Abducens Nerve Damage
Damaged lateral rectus
=>medial strabismus
Trochlear Nerve Damage
Damaged superior oblique
Eye rotates laterally; pt. tilts head in opposite direction to compensate
-Also will have difficulty walking down stairs
Occulomotor Nerve Damage
3 Symptoms:
- Lateral Strabismus (damaged medial rects)
- Ptosis (damaged levator palpebrae superioris)
- Mydriasis (damaged pupillary constrictor)
