what is oral composition?
the use of oral speaking rather than writing
what are the benefits of oral composition?
-speaking can have a lot more emotion than writing something down and you can put a lot more emotion into certain words or phrases.
what is an epithet?
a literary device that describes a person, place or object by placing a descriptive word in front of the name, e.g ‘bright eyed athene’, ‘stormy-eyed athene’
what is repetition at word level?
when a single word or phrase is repeated within a short period of time for effect
what is repetition at scene level?
when a single scene is repeated continously within a short period of time or within the book as a whole. This is also used for effect
what is homeric ring composition?
formal device of signalling a closure/ the end of something by repeating at the end a theme announced at the beginning
what is hysteron proteron?
when someone says that they will do something in a particular sequence but ends up doing it in the reverse order
what is an anachronism?
an error of chronology- an object or event is placed in the wrong period of time e.g having characters use words from a different time period.
what is an example of an anachronism in the odyssesy?
Homer references iron tools and tribes that hadn’t yet reached Greece by the Bronze age
