after telemachus and his men have feasted what happens?
Nestor begins to ask them questions, asking who they are.
what does telemachus say to nestor?
tells Nestor that they are from Ithaca and have come on business to seek any information about his father, odysseus. Telemachus claims that we know about all the other men that took part in the war, and where they went or died, but Zeus has ‘wrapped the death of Odysseus in utter mystery’. Telemachus asks Nestor to tell him anything he knows about what happened to Odysseus, and not to soften the story to protect his feelings, but describe how he saw it.
how does nestor respond to telemachus?
Nestor mentions the many men that fell in Troy and what he witnessed during the war, and claims that the achaeans endured so much pain during the war. He describes odysseus as a cunning man, who had wits and was very admirable and tells telemachus that he resembles him in speech.
how does nestor describe what happened to brothers menelaus and agammemnon?
Nestor claims that after the Trojan war, Athene created a feud between the brothers menelaus and agamemnon- menelaus wanted to return home after the war, but agamemnon wanted to stay and pay offerings and respect to Athene. The next morning, Menelaus and half the men left and returned home safely, whilst the other half of men stayed with agamemnon.
Nestor claims that he returned safely to plyos and doesn’t know about the fate of odysseus.
how does nestor describe the death of agammemnon?
Nestor then tells the story of Agammemnon and Aegisthus- Aegisthus killed agamemnon, and in return agamemnon’s son, orestes killed aegisthus. Nestor encourages telemachus to be more like orestes and this causes telemachus to be determined to restore honour in his household by defeating the suitors.
what does telemachus say that he wishes?
Telemachus tells Nestor that he wishes that the gods would give him enough strength to avenge his father and to get the suitors out of the palace. Nestor claims that he wishes that athene could give telemachus the same loving care that she gave to his father during the campaigns at Troy, and that he has never seen the gods show so much affection to mortals as athene showed to odysseus. Telemachus replies to this that he will never receive help or love from the gods in finding his father and banishing the suitors- but athene in the form of mentes criticises telemachus for speaking so foolishly
why does telemachus end the coversation with nestor?
he says that they shouldn’t discuss such painful matters anymore, and that Odysseus will never return home as the gods have already decided his fate and have cursed him.
what does telemachus ask nestor to tell him about?
about menelaus’ story and why he didn’t avenge his brother’s (agamemnon’s) death.
